about Native Americans?
Since i’ve been reading the Twilight series i’ve been wondering about Native Americans, is there many of them around any more as America for years is mostly populated by western white people and other people from different countries and over the years as they married non-native american they are slowly dieing out. and are they only really found uncertain states. in the Twilight books they talk about the reservations that the Native Americans lives in, what are they?
I would like to know more about how America become the country it is today, i see on TV the old cow boy films wasn’t it before that time that the first western settlers settled in the US, how long was there battles because the first western settlers by what the picture i’ve seen wear tudor style clothing but in cow boy films they wear more Victorian style clothes. I live in the UK and we don’t learn much about America unless it relates to the UK.
first caution: do not look at anything coming out of hollywood to be accurate when it comes to native people. if you want to see movies with accurate depictions, look at films made by native people about us. one exception is DreamKeepers which was advised by natives the entire shooting.
the strange thing about the american telling of history regarding the indigenous people of this continent is that they claim we were savage and war-like while at the same time bragging about how easily the “conquered” us. if we were half as savage and warlike as they claim, they wuold have never been able to establish settlements here.
the fact is, if not for the help of native people, those first settlements would have failed miserably. it was only after they arrived in sufficient numbers to out number us that they began the systematic killing of native people.
most of us were not war-like as depicted. some like my nation were powerful and respected because if we did go to war, we did so all out. other tribes like those in california were peaceful. they were totally genocided in some cases..slaughtered by white men seeking gold.
the way native people were disposessed of our lands was by trickery and legeslation. there were many agreements made (treaties) with the various tribal governments and the usa government. but after the usa got what they wanted they refused to uphold their end of the agreement. this practice continues today with hundreds of land claims backlogged in courts that can not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the land is not ours and so they ignore the case for decades or longer. we CAN prove it is ours.
if we had internet in those days you can bet the western nations would still be owning the vast majority of lands. we here on the east would have gotten word out not to trust any of the invaders. they speak good words but when it comes to actions it is all bad.
come to think of it, their politicians haven’t changed at all.
ETA: we number about 2 million in the usa and another million approx. in canada
