Anyone else own or know someone who owns a Shiba Inu or a Shiba Inu mix?

My dog is a Shiba Inu/Yellow Lab mix
I found her a year ago so I didn’t raise her as a puppy so I have no clue about what happened to her. She hardly ever barks, to the point that many of the neighbors in my building have told me they had no idea I even owned a dog. I heard that Shiba Inu don’t bark often nor go in the house (she hasn’t gone once in the almost two years I’ve had her) is this true or could she be this way because of a abuse?

When I found her she wouldn’t even roll over so I had no idea she was a girl. She was covered in dirt & fleas. She also chewed herself so much that see damaged her teeth so bad due being allergic to flea bites. She hates if I yell at the TV or on the phone (she’ll hide & has a look of shame if I do yell)

Hi my friend and neighbor owns a Shiba Inu so I have done allot of research on this breed. I also have done allot of research on other dog breeds as well, because of my interest in dogs personally. In my opinion, from the facts you have discussed, I can say that your Shiba Inu has shown you the signs of her abuse. She is showing her fear of raised voices, and has probably learned to keep quiet through different ranges of either training gone wrong or abusive techniques. Most dogs of her breed will at least alert their owners of someone being at the door. Thus they make great protectors for their family. They if taught from a young age will learn house training as in letting you know when they need to be walked for going ‘potty’ or are in need of exercise. My friends dog also came from an abusive past home, but has slowly come around and is recovering nicely. With you showing your acceptance and helping them to learn that you will not harm them they will adapt and you will see a happier more playful dog in perhaps as little as a six week span as long as you are consistent with your training and your patience and give love and time and a quiet place for your Dog to find a relaxing place when she feels the need. She will let you know when she is ready to accept you. You cannot push that , be patient and for flea treatment talk with your vet. Shiba Inu’s are known for having allergies to fleas. And a natural oil produced in their skin that keeps their fur shiny and does not require bathing very often. Although, they do require some daily brushing for preventing the hair shedding to become a nuisance in your home. I recommend the glove style found at many pet stores. She will merely think you are petting her and at the same time you will be maintaining her beautiful coat. Their are many books available on this breed. I found mine for my friend with tons of information through Amazon.com . Do beware of small toys that cannot stand up to a large chewer , this breed can destroy them in 10 minutes flat! Best option? Take her to a doggy class for learning to socialize her with other dogs, if you can. females are better socializers. males are more prone to wanting to show aggression . Best time to teach socialization in the Shiba Inu breed is from puppyhood. At two years old, you have now got to reteach her with starting first with earning her trust and love. Best of luck.
