Football – Overlays on the field – How do they do it?
There has to be some simple explanation, but I admit to being enthralled by this. When watching the football game, viewers see that the TV station has inserted a 10 yard marker, or a first down marker, etc. on the field. What interests me is that the TV viewer sees the field, and also sees the players’ shoes walking on top the marker as if it is real. Of course we know that it is really some sort of overlay/underlay on the screen, and not a solid object on the field – but it appears to us to be on top of the field, but under the players’ feet! How do they do it?
They know what color the field is: green. So, they only put on the overlay where the green stuff is.
There’s more to it than that, since some uniforms have green in them, and grass is not all the same shade of green. The algorithms are tweaked to try to exclude green uniforms, but if you watch very closely, they sometimes botch it. Fortunately, the players are moving, and so the artifacts don’t usually last long.
It’s also made complicated by the fact that it’s not just green, it’s also brown (where the dirt shows through) and white (on the line markers). Some teams have brown; lots of teams have white.
With the white, they know where to expect the markers, and can take that into account. With the brown, as with the green, they know what shade to expect from the uniforms. In both cases, the computer occasionally makes mistakes, but if you’ve got your eye on the game you usually won’t notice.
