How Greed Continues to Undermine the Morals and Values of America
In a time long past and far removed from our current society, people lived with honor, morals and values. If you gave your word, you kept it. A hand shake was as good as a written contract. Lives were uncomplicated to a certain degree, we valued family and friends, we kept GOD (no matter what you called him) in our hearts. Neighbors cared about each other and pulled together to survive the hard times.
All that being said, we still had our problems. Ignorance kept us from understanding each other, fear and cultural differences caused pain and suffering for everyone. Through turmoil, pain and heartache we have started to learn from our mistakes. So, why after all that we have been through, have we allowed a handful of persons to undermine our society.
Once upon a time, school started with prayer and with a pledge. Why was that so wrong? Why did we allow a handful of individual destroy something that could bring us together. Why was it so important to destroy prayer in school? Instead of removing prayer entirely from public schools, why couldn’t respect and tolerance be taught for different cultures, types of religion and forms of prayers? This seems a perfect time to teach tolerance and understanding. Why must it be all or nothing? Why must we allow destruction instead of construction?
There was a time that television and TV shows were entertaining. They didn’t depend on blatant sex to sell. TV shows were funny and family friendly. Movies were frightening without the horrific images we see today. We used our imagination and it was 10 times worse then what we actually saw on the screen. We tried to protect our children from violence and bad behavior.
Reality shows are all the rage today. It’s supposed to be entertaining when we see people lying, cheating, and fighting. It’s entertaining to watch people scheming on the best way to hurt or humiliate someone. This is how far we have come as a culture and as a people. It’s disgusting how low we have sunk in how we view entertainment. We create celebrities out of these individuals, with their 15 minutes of fame. Movie stars are more important then individuals who really do something with their lives. Why is it more important to watch how or what a so called celebrity eats then helping out a family in distress.
It really comes down to one thing, and that one thing is greed. Greed has over taken business, the law, show business and just about everything in our lives. There was a time that greed was seen as a horrible trait to have, now it seems that it is encouraged. When a business was seen as greedy, they were also seen as corrupt. Now it seems that greed isn’t consider a bad trait, but one that should be encouraged.
At one time, suing for the tiniest thing was inexcusable. People only sued when real injury occurred. Now, we are hit in the face hourly by lawyers telling us that they can get money for this injury or that illness. All in the name of greed. Sure they can sue, but when it’s all said and done, they walk away with the money not the individual or individuals who were named in the suit. Think about that the next time some attorney sends you unsolicited information on some class action law suit.
Morals and Values seem to be a thing of the past. People don’t say thank you when someone holds the door for them. Children have little to no respect for their elders. Kindness and generosity have been overtaken by greed and envy.
People talk about progress, but it’s what they don’t talk about that really hurts America and the rest of the world. Kindness, acceptance, and hope are words that don’t seem to exist anymore. Tolerance is hard to find, while greed and corruption are abundant.
Where do we go from here? Maybe it’s time to get back to the basics of being what we should be. Maybe it’s time to look at each other with tolerance. Maybe it’s time to see greed as something negative, instead of a positive trait. Perhaps thank you should be a greater part of our lives. As part of the human race, we need to take back our society and make this world a better place for future generations.
