My cat is getting better at hunting my other cat. Worried that he might eventually unintentionally kill her.?
I adopted Nimmy (short for Nimrod) when he was 4 months old and my female cat was 4 years old. Both are fixed.
It started with chasing . At first she could knock him off. However, he has honed his skills so that he can now knock her down. The other day I caught him trying to go after her neck with an open month. Yesterday, he knocked her down and was going after her like prey. When I scared him off, there were pieces of her fur on the rug. I have tried water – it doesn’t stop him.
He has a strong hunting instinct. (He once saw a horse jumping on tv – had a mike attached so you could hear its breathing – he looked at it and then looked at me, made a hunting sound and had a dreamy look – wouldn’t it be wonderful to hunt a horse). He has toys I throw his food for him to hunt – has strong muscles. He has few chances to hunt mice.
I am afraid that in the act of hunting he will for get he is she is a cat and sees her as prey and might kill her. What should I do?
I don’t think it has anything to do with hunting. This sounds more like he just doesn’t like the other cat.
I would keep them seperated or you might end up with one hurt cat. Making cats get along is a very difficult task. They have personalities just like you and I do. You can’t force them to like one another. So, better to keep them seperated.
Good luck!
Edited to add: Palemale the original poster already stated that he/she is worried that their cat will unintentionally kill the other cat. That is NOT play fighting.
