Hayden Panettiere – Hypocrite?
I’m sick of hearing how great she is for “trying to save the dolphins.” Don’t get me wrong, dolphins are my favorite animal, but she does not deserve any of the publicity she gets for that. Why? Because for $500, you can buy a LEATHER purse designed by her. As a vegan – this upsets me. I have heard many people on the news, and even people at school say that she is a great person for caring about animals. It seems more like a publicity stunt to me, because I don’t think she cares too much about the cows being slaughtered for her designer handbag. What does everyone else think of this?
(By the way, I got this idea from a letter to TV Guide, but as a vegan and an animal lover I wanted to see everybody’s thoughts on the issue.)
Well I doubt you will vote this “best answer,” but I have a hard time giving ANYONE props for flying across the globe to save animals from being slaughtered, when there are PEOPLE undergoing tremendous hardship much closer to home. Despite being a pet owner and animal lover, I still place much more value on HUMAN life. I mean, just travelling to the airport she probably passed by areas were children are going to sleep hungry every night, and across the globe thousands if not millions of people are killed every year through famine and genocide.
But to keep it in the “dolphins vs cows” context… I don’t think hypocrite is the right word. For one thing, you can be against the needless slaughter of any animal, and still think it is OK to breed and slaughter cattle for food. And I don’t really think she did this just for the publicity, seeing as how Heroes is one of the hottest shows on TV… she is already getting PLENTY of publicity just for showing up anyplace there are photographers. But I do think her celebrity is being used to make a point… as happens with many celebreties. Whether she decided to do this on her own, resulting from her true convictions, or was told to do it as a way to get good publicty, is something that I think we don’t have enough information to really determine.
