This winter has had it’s effects on New England homes. We’ve seen more ice dams than ever, and since these ice dams can cause severe damage to your roof and your home, it’s important to clear them off.
What exactly is an ice dam? An ice dam occurs when the melted snow on your roof works its way underneath the shingles and creates leaks. The same melted snow drips over gutters and the face boards of a house, creating icicles. This is an issue that certainly should not be overlooked, as it could lead to extensive damage to your home over time.
The immediate solution to ice dams are to remove the snow on the roof. However, this is often a task that is dangerous, and therefore a professional with the right equipment is necessary. In this news piece featured by WDHD 7 News Boston, Dave Loehr, an Olympic Roofing manager, describes Olympic’s work on removing ice dams. “We’re removing all of the snow from this residential roof. Even a properly installed roof can still have problems with ice dams.”
It should be noted, that attempting to break apart ice dams and icicles yourself can be both dangerous and damaging to your home. “Breaking the icicles, you’ll damage your gutter system. You can create more damage by doing that,” said George Vasiliades, Olympic Roofing owner.
It’s been a busy winter for us at Olympic. “We’re inundated with calls, the phone doesn’t stop ringing. We’re getting about 20 calls an hour right now,” said Vasiliades.
While we anxiously await Spring, make sure to take a close look at your roof to take note of any damages this winter might have left.
