Is the obsession with reality TV just a phase or it this what people want?
Guilty as charged because I enjoy The Apprentice, Dragons Den, even Next Top Model
I’m wondering why I’m interested in watching a bunch of strangers thrown together in close knit living quarters, am I fascinated by social interaction?
I have lived like this in real life, working on cruise ships. When you arrive for your contract you are suddenly spending the next 6 months with a team of international people, some bonded over a few months already, some new as well, your cabin mate can be any kind of person completely different from you and you just have to suck it up. We certainly don’t fight like depicted on these programs, instant dismissal off the ship. In fact we could show the UN how it is really possible for 100s of people from different cultures and countries to live together in harmony.
Do most people enjoy reality tv because they get a buzz out of seeing people fighting and sensationalism tv?
Its good entertainment is all. The fact that these shows are called “Reality” t.v. is ironic because most of the situations are instigated by the producers of the show. They create a cast of conflicting and overdramatic personalities, drop ‘em off in a nice big house with plenty of liquor and put them in situations where some drama is bound to happen. You send a bunch of rowdy 20 somethings to a club in a paid for limo and you got a recipe for excitement. Not to mention, the ratings for episodes involving *physical* violence go throught the roof. I think most people dont like drama in their own lives, but seeing it happen in somenoe else’s is entertaining.
