Keep The Kids Out Of The Kitchen
There used to be a TV show that was all about the weird things that children do. While the show politely called them the ‘strangest’ things, they were often more dumb than strange. While they do get smarter with age, kids can do the most dangerous things, too. That’s why you’ve got to keep dangerous kitchen implements out of their hands.
Do you have a rechargeable electric hand mixer? Pray your kids don’t get their hands on it. There is nothing cooler than using one of those gizmos for zapping alien space invaders in the backyard, unless it would be to use it to make a delicious mud pie. The children will squeeze every drop of electricity out of the mixer. When it doesn’t work anymore, they’ll just leave it somewhere and leave you wondering what happened to it.
While annoying, you can laugh off some of the things they do, scold them and tell them never to do it again. Other kitchen utensils they take outside to play with, though, can be downright dangerous and even potentially deadly.
It is hard to imagine how anything as dangerous looking as a Wusthof knife set could look like a child’s play thing. That’s exactly what it looks like to a small child who only knows that mommy can safely do so many cool things with it. It’s more understandable that a child would play with a gun, because guns don’t look dangerous like knives do.
Some kids don’t seem to understand that knives are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. They think that if mom can use a knife to cut a cake, they can take it outside to cut up a cardboard box or dig in the soil. Children think they are invincible. They don’t understand that one slip of the knife can have devastating consequences.
No one is saying that you have to keep your knives under lock and key like you would a hunting rifle. However, a level of caution is necessary. While knives are out of sight in a drawer, they are not out of the reach of children, who would notice where you keep them. It is probably a better idea to put your sharp knives in a knife block set at the back of the kitchen bench, well out of reach of children.
Kids will be kids. They will do the strangest and the dumbest things. That’s why, as adults, it’s our job to protect them and to teach them. They will grow up eventually.
