Keep The Kids Out Of The Kitchen
There used to be a TV show that was all about the weird things that children do. While the show politely called them the ‘strangest’ things, they were often more dumb than strange. While they do get smarter with age, kids can do the most dangerous things, too. That’s why you’ve got to keep dangerous kitchen implements out of their hands.
Some of the things kids will do with your kitchen utensils and appliances are funny. The girls will take your electric hand mixer outside and use it to mix up a batch of mud cakes. The boys might use it as a ray gun and chase their friends around the yard with it until the battery finally goes dead. Then, since it is obviously broken, they’ll toss it aside and you won’t know a thing until you really need it and can’t find it.
Things like that are the kinds of things you laugh about together when they get older. There are other kitchen implements though, that never have a happy ending when they get into the hands of small children.
Take that Wusthof knife set that you love so much, for example. Believe it or not, a small child might think it looks like something to play with. You wouldn’t think so. After all, knives just look dangerous, while even guns don’t look dangerous until you learn about what they can do.
Some kids don’t seem to understand that knives are dangerous and should only be handled by adults. They think that if mom can use a knife to cut a cake, they can take it outside to cut up a cardboard box or dig in the soil. Children think they are invincible. They don’t understand that one slip of the knife can have devastating consequences.
No one is saying that you have to keep your knives under lock and key like you would a hunting rifle. However, a level of caution is necessary. While knives are out of sight in a drawer, they are not out of the reach of children, who would notice where you keep them. It is probably a better idea to put your sharp knives in a knife block set at the back of the kitchen bench, well out of reach of children.
Children will always act like children. That’s who they are, after all. It’s lucky they have their parents around to guide them until they are old enough to know better than to play with knives.
