Roller Window Shades; A Terrific End To Illumination Problems In Condominiums
A couple of months ago, we moved into an apartment that had the worst aluminum window blinds! At that time, my daughter was about six months old, and we had been working on her sleep schedule for the last three months. If it was not totally dark and quiet, she could not sleep. After moving in, it became apparent that the first thing that would need to be done if the baby was ever going to sleep was to buy some drapes. I bought cheap ‘room darkening’ drapes to put over the windows in a dark color, but even those and the cheap aluminum blinds together did not stop the sun from leaking through. Desperate, my husband taped cut up cardboard boxes to the glass windows of her room underneath the drapes.
That worked for a while until the apartment manager said that the cardboard looked terrible and had to be taken down within the next few weeks. After looking online for window shade treatments and talking to many friends, a girlfriend told me about the terrific roller shades that she had just gotten. Now, I had seen roller shades before at the basement of my in-law’s house. They were antiquated, and when you wanted them to roll up, if you did not do it just so, the window shades would whirl up a thousand miles an hour. But my friend swore that these were different. So I trusted her and ordered some blackout roller shades. They were fantastic!
The roller shades were easy to install and so simple to use! Made of thick pieces of fabric coated with vinyl, the window shades were high quality and were incredibly easy to make go up and down. We ordered more for our own bedroom window, and I love how they can be adjusted to stay at any level you want. They never get dirty because you simply pull the bar at the bottom of the shade so you never have to touch the fabric. You do not ever have to dust them or try to untangle any cords. The bar at the bottom of the shade is just heavy enough to keep the roller shade down at all times and lying flat so that sun never creeps in.
Since getting our roller shades less than a year ago, I have found out that you can get other varieties of roller window shades as well. There are varieties that you can buy that merely dim the light, but don’t keep it out completely. I love bright sunlight coming in the family room of our apartment, but sometimes it is way too bright! You cannot have the window shades open if you are going to watch TV or use the computer. Solar window shades are perfect for a room like this! They say that they are called “sunglasses” for your windows because they keep out UV rays, reduce glare, and diffuse the light so that it is not so overwhelming! I love it because then you have the option of still seeing out of your window. Most window shades only offer the option of down or up, open or closed. But the solar window shades do not obstruct your view at all! Additionally, the help keep out the extra heat that sunshine makes, so in the summer you do not have to run your air conditioner more just because you wanted to be able to see outside!
Compared to other window shades, I personally think that roller shades are a perfect solution to any light issue you have in your apartment or home! Do not bother fussing with other types of window shades and treatments!
