In turbulent economic times like these, taking an expensive vacation to the place you’ve always wanted to visit may seem nearly impossible. And indeed, actually physically going on that trip may not be economically feasible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience some of the interesting things you would experience on your dream vacation. Many travel shows on satellite tv make you feel like you’re practically there with the host, and with the creation on high definition, the vivid details you see make you feel even closer. So until you’re able to actually visit the places you dream of, you can sit back and enjoy learning about other cultures and cuisines from the comfort of your own couch. Here are two of the most interesting travel shows that focus on food and are worth taking a look at.
For the past six years, the Travel Channel’s Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations has covered the topic of eating interesting foods all over the world. With over 90 episodes already aired, you will surely find many episodes that are bound to fascinate you with the exotic dishes Bourdain (a professional chef turned world traveler) indulges in such as lamb in Saudi Arabia, steak in Argentina, armadillo in Uruguay, guacamole-coated hot dogs in Chile, black ceviche in Peru, Banh Mi in Vietnam, an Egyptian Breakfast, or street food in Prague. Additionally, he’s eaten many less appealing things including a whole cobra, unwashed warthog rectum, ant eggs, fermented shark, sheep testicles, and a raw seal eyeball. The beauty of watching someone else eat those things is that you don’t have to do it yourself to see what it’s like. Bourdain does an excellent job of explaining the experience, so even if you make your dream trip someday, you don’t have to try a dish that you think sounds unappetizing because you’ve already heard about and seen what that’s like. You can follow Bourdain’s adventures on your satellite tv, his shows regularly appear on the Travel Channel and the Discovery Travel & Living Channel.
On Bizarre Foods, which later became Bizarre World, host Andrew Zimmern (a chef and food columnist) travels all over the world eating unique foods that appear to be bizarre and often gross to most Americans. While the show is similar to Bourdain’s show, there are quite a number of differences, and obviously the hosts’ different personalities make both shows quite different from each other. Zimmern takes the time to talk about how the food eat eats is produced, stored, prepared, and served. He has traveled to hundreds of places, some of which include Morocco, Spain, New York City, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Ecuador, the Philippines, America’s Gulf Coast, Chile, Minnesota, China, India, Bolivia, and Russia. As the show has evolved, the focus is no longer centered completely on food, but also includes quite a bit of culture and activities that can be found in all of the places he manages to visit. You can follow Zimmern with your satellite tv on the Travel Channel or on DVD.
