High-Tech Hearing Aids

When we notice our vision is changing, we get glasses. If a person gets a tooth ache, the dentist is called. and we never think twice about seeking a doctor’s care with a broken bone.

When we don’t hear as well as we use to, we crank up the TV so loud all the neighbors know what we’re watching from their own homes, and we don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Why is it we humans have such an issue about needing hearing aids? According to reports by the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders over 28 million people suffer some form of hearing loss.

Hearing aids can be purchased to treat most forms of hearing loss. Yes, we all remember our grandparents and the hearing aids that looked like a small transistor radio complete with wires running from pocket to ear, but they have definitely improved them with digital technology just like computers.

Modern hearing aids are completely programmable, and are equipped with a computer chip, a microphone, a receiver, and a battery. This allows the audiologist the capability to customize the aid to your exact hearing needs. You can expect the newest versions of hearing aids to be smaller and more discreet. Plus, they can be programmed in a way to meet your unique hearing impairment.

Truly, no two people have the exact same degree of hearing loss. Some people struggle hearing various frequencies, from high pitched to low pitched. This type of loss affects communication because vowel sounds are low frequencies and consonants are high pitches, causing the person with the hearing loss to struggle to fill in the blanks.

For many people it’s the volume of the sound that causes them problems. Because most sounds will register to the soft side, that’s the cause of loud TVs and radios, as well as as a speaker to repeat themselves because they’re being heard clearly.

An audiogram or hearing test, is an important piece of information that enables the audiologist to program individual hearing aids to optimize a patients’ ability to hear. They also recommend that people go in for testing each year after they notice there might be some loss of hearing. Hearing experts have three different levels of educations. The highest level is the otolaryngologist or ear, nose and throat doctor. He is trained to diagnose and treat hearing impairments caused by medical conditions.

A Master’s degree is a minimum requirement for Audiologists, as well as being licensed by the state they work in. You also need a state license to be a hearing aid dispenser, but not a master’s. Aside from these three professional classifications, there are salespeople who are associated with a specific manufacturer of hearing aids who are highly trained on all aspects of the amplification devices they represent. They are often helpful resources for those who program and dispense hearing aids. (SKIP THIS SENTENCE)–(ADDRESSED ABOVE–I DO NOT FEEL IT SHOULD BE REPEATED)

There are currently four kinds of hearing aids available. The smallest are referred to as “completely in the canal” hearing instruments. These devices are so discreet that they can hardly be seen. they are also the most expensive. They are most frequently used for those patients who have severe to profound hearing loss issues.

The next device that is available is called “in the canal.” While these are a bit bigger than the “completely in the canal” instruments, they’re still able to fit quite a way down the ear canal. and are more relevant for mild to moderate hearing losses.

You can see “in the ear” hearing aids with the naked eye, and are the most common hearing aids you see. The types of hearing instruments that are perhaps the most familiar are those that are “behind the ear.” They provide the highest degree of amplification and flexibility, and require a larger battery. You can get analog hearing aids for much less than these, but they don’t work as well.

Over 28 million Americans, from every age group, have some form of hearing loss. There are other facts about hearing problems as well. The cause stems from either an obstruction in the ear, or disease, or injury to the ear. 95% of the people with hearing loss are able to correct their loss of hearing.

Younger generations are beginning to experience more hearing loss than ever before. As a matter of fact people ages 18-44 years have had a 17% increase in hearing loss in the years from 1971-1990. Otitis media is the hearing loss variety you’ll typically run across. is the main culprit of temporary hearing loss.
