WWE Smackdown 6/05/09 QnD results
John Morrison d. Shelton Benjamin with the Starship Pain (***). Damn, these two work so well together and it’s been a while since I’ve seen Shelton have a match with someone he couldn’t work with.
Chris Jericho d. R-Truth after a Codebreaker (**1/2). Damn good pre-match promo by Truth and overall very good segment. Anyways, this was a pretty good match. The Springboard into a Codebreaker never get old. Seriously. Truth ATE that knee. It’s amazing how Killings doesn’t get the praise he deserves. The guy is so charismatic and athletically gifted and he made himself a legitimate midcarder here; he had a competitive match, did cool moves, and cut a solid promo.
CM Punk d. Umaga with the Go to Sleep (**). It’s silly to have a match right before the PPV with the same two guys. Thats TNA levels of stupidity. It’s still odd to hear Umaga speak normally. He just told the ref to “move out” so he could do more damage. I really wish they had given some precedence for Umagas sudden mastery of the English language. I was pretty amazed when Punk actually executed the GTS on FREAKIN’ 350 pound Umaga whose body weight isn’t evenly distributed. And weird how Punk couldn’t hit a GTS on Snitsky and Kane.
Layla, Candice Michelle & Alicia Fox d. Melina, Eve & Gail Kim after Layla pinned Melina (**1/2). Layla without straight hair just isn’t the same. And why is Michelle McCool doing power moves to a woman bigger than she is. Taker influence? Her mega push is really annoying. I liked her better when she was the Hot Teacher. Anyways, it was still a pretty fun divas match, despite that.
The Great Khali d. Dolph Ziggler with a chokeslam (**). Khali gets the jobber entrance, but Dolph still gets killed. That was actually one of Khali’s best matches. That’s not saying much though, but at least it seems he found his groove.
Edge d. Rey Mysterio with a spear (***1/2). Rey looked scared to do his usual crowd interractions. Speaking of which, I’d laugh my ass off if Rey socked one of those kids thinking it was Jericho. Oh, and Mysterio sure has gotten fat. I would expect him to get even skinnier with all the steroids gone but he has managed to Braden Walker himself to a lesser extent. I guess he’s on the Samoa Joe diet. Anyways, this match ruled all kinds of ass.
SmackDown> all other wrestling on TV. This is the A Show. It was a great show with great hype for the PPV that I was probably going to buy, but this really sold me. Jericho/Rey and Edge/Hardy will make that PPV alone. Compare these two builds to Orton/Batista. Yeah, no contest. Congrats Smackdown, you should be main eventing the PPV yet again.
