Do you have an “open door” policy with your friends?
Where I used to live, I never locked my doors, and it was never odd or strange for me to come home and see friends sitting on the couch, eating and drinking whatever they could find, watching TV…they were always welcome to walk in pretty much anytime of day or night.
I remember one night when a Shakespeare Troupe of about 30 people, who were using my yard as outdoor rehearsal space, slowly started coming into the house one by one when they smelled the pasta cooking, I ended up feeding this small army and they all camped out in the house and didn’t leave for two days.
Do you enjoy something similar with your friends, and if so, do you have rules, a system for it, or is it just kind of organically communcal in nature?
When I was around 24 years old (yes, I can still remember back that far) I had an apartment where I met the best group of friends ever. We used to joke that my apartment was like “Jerry’s” place. People used to come and go. We even had our own “Kramer” that would stumble in and go straight to my pantry and grab a package of microwave popcorn and start popping it. As he would eat it, he would drop half on the floor and then stumble his way out and back up to his place. Did he ever once ask? lol never. Did I mind? lol never.
I was gone for the weekend once and came back to find three of my friends in my apartment watching tv. Hey the good news was that I had a basket of laundry that they sat and folded for me. How cool is that??
I sorta liked the open door policy…..but it only works with the right people…..with trust…..and with respect. I soooo miss that.
Having said that…..anyone care for some popcorn? Help yourself!
