Dog Owner Training – One Big Secret To Learn Before You Begin Dog Training

Prior to beginning your own dog training, you should know that there is a secret to success .

Dogs, dogs, dogs. I can’t remember a time without one as a child. You are probably familiar with the type of dog I am thinking of. Our family dogs were never planned. They were frequently a product of some friend’s unwanted and unplanned litter.

The dogs were fun to have around, but we had no clue about “real dog training.” The dog would sit when you had a treat for him, and he would lie down, too. But if there was no treat in sight, the dog had a mind of its own.

We really didn’t care as kids whether our dogs were well trained. Actually we didn’t even know it was possible except for seeing dog movies on TV. It was just a dog.

But all that changed the minute I got my first dog in my own home. I still remember how cute she was as a puppy. But aren’t they all? Over the first few months, she grew from a lovable pup to a rambunctious liability. All I can say is, “bad dog.” That’s what she had become.

You know the kind. They do everything the opposite of Lassie, the perfect canine. They bark incessantly, jump up on guests, chew up shoes, pillows, and all other household items, and, of course, they run away and won’t come when called.

What a sad state of affairs. I figured all I had to do was be a friend and give her treats, and she would be my loving, obedient companion. But that’s not how it played out.

It was time to find out where I had gone amiss. So I hopped on the Internet and did a bit of reading about dog training and dog obedience.

It didn’t take long to find out that there is a common thread that ran through my findings. It had to do with how a dog owner can have a good relationship with his pet. (it was clear that I knew nothing about this):

You, too, can discover the secret of The Alpha Dog!

It occurred to me that I had seen the term “Alpha dog” in books and movies about teams of huskies that pulled sleds in Alaska. Dogs are naturally pack animals, living together, and they have a pecking order with a single dog at the top, the Alpha Dog.

The top dog gets to do everything first in the pack, whether it is eating or going through the door, or lying on the floor and not moving to let the owner pass.

This is where you come in. There is no pack in your house, but your dog still has the natural tendency to either be the number one dog or have someone else be that top dog. YOU need to be the top dog in your house. Otherwise, your dog will grab the spot (my dog had already done this).

It’s a fairly simple concept, really. The basic truth is that you need to reverse the roles with your dog.
