anyone tried the patch perfect grass seeds for pet spots?
My black lab is leaving huge dead circles and patches in my back yard and digging up other spots of lawn, like full on ripping out grass even, and it’s looking horrible!! We don’t want to leave him chained up to a small area but if we can’t fix the lawn that’s what it’s going to come down to. We are looking at the patch perfect grass seeds as seen on tv, that claims to regrow grass in shade, high traffic, pet spots, etc. Would it work in my yard and do you have to keep the dog away (no digging, etc) until it’s growing? thanks for the help! next stop is the dog will need a different home if we can’t fix this!
Patch Perfect will probably work, but it’s VERY expensive per square foot compared to similar products you can find at Home Depot. It’s basically seed encased with fertilizer + a mulching product. You do have to keep pets off of it while it’s germinating… you can buy cheap garden edging to put around the patches while it’s starting to grow.
Re: your lab, it sounds like the poor thing is bored out of his mind and/or under-exercised.
How many walks is he taken on each day and for how long? How many hours a day does he stay locked outside? It sounds like the toys you’ve provided him for mental stimulation aren’t cutting it. Do you use treat-filled toys while he has to be out there such as Kongs?
You may also consider making a sandbox for him so he has an appropriate outlet for digging. Dogs love to dig… it’s just something they love to do. Instead of fighting the urge, work with it… bury some fun toys in the sandbox for him to dig up… praise him when he digs in the sandbox and correct him (such as with a sharp “enh-enh!” sound) when you catch him digging in the grass.
