Who Has The Best Coffee?
The large brands dominate coffee today. If you would like to have coffee with friends when you’re out, you can choose between Costa Coffee, Nero’s, Starbucks and any of the several smaller chains that are cropping up every day. Depending on your taste of coffee, coffee shops in general, do provide good value for money. Some coffee aficionados swear by smaller, more intimate establishments which may just be coffee snobbery, or imply a genuine difference in the quality of the coffee available at a big chain cafe or a small-town, single outlet one.
Starbucks is the ubiquitous coffee chain whose global dominance is often seen in terms of coffee colonization. Starbucks began in Seattle; however, the company has expanded its international reach to such places as Japan and the Philippines. Starbucks started of as just a coffee shop; however, today it is able to make and store its own brand of coffee, with many different brands, its most popular being the House blend.
Founded in the UK, Costa Coffee was created by two Italian brothers; they have created a very unique blend of coffee that they call a slow-roasted blend of mocha Italia. Costa Café is able to capitalize on its Italian roots; this is heavily reflected in the ambience of their cafes and also the unique coffee that they offer their customers. While this has been controversial, with many people claiming that they are Italian only in name and are heavily modified in order to suit the British palate, there is no doubt that Costa remains a very popular brand and also has outlets across the globe.
Another important coffee shop chain with an Italian background in the UK is Caffe Nero. While Caffe Nero has a good presence within the UK, its overseas operations are confined in the present to Turkey and the UAE. Caffe Nero, whose menu is mostly espresso based drinks, recently launched a new range of cold-coffee drinks, and added to their repertoire of flavoured coffee drinks as well.
Originally founded in Chicago, USA, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, operates in more than 30 countries worldwide. The brand now has a significant presence in Australia; they have a presence in every major town and city in the country. In general, Gloria Jean’s Coffees are very rich; because of this, the company has come under fire for offering coffee with excessive sugar content and for not giving their customers sufficient information about their drinks.
There are only a few players that dominate the global coffee market; in the majority of countries, you’ll find that the local chains are still able to do well in small towns and cities. Examples of these local chains include Beanscene in Scotland, Cafe Coffee Day and Barista in India and Cafe Trieste in California, USA. None of these brands are global players; however, they do go out of their way to produce superior coffee and this enables them to have a near monopoly on coffee consumption in these regions.
